2011 Bulls for sale

                                                                                                 2-2-12

Charolais Friends,

Our purebred Charolais bulls are ready for your inspection.  We believe these bulls represent some of the best genetics available in the Charolais breed. The average of the EPDs in these bulls are well above the average in the Charolais breed.

While EPD’s help the cattleman select the best genetics available, we believe it is still important to select individuals that will best improve the genetics of the commercial cow herd.  Cross breeding with good Charolais genetics captures hi-bred vigor and will put more pounds on the hoof without sacrificing calving ease. The hi-bred vigor represents “free” pounds in your calves.  We believe our bulls will put more dollars in your pocket book!

The past few years we had some exciting events in our operation as one of our females won her class at the Junior National Charolais Show and later was named the Grand Champion Female at the Kansas Beef Expo.  She was named a Division Champion in the 2009 NWSS in Denver.   Also, KC Impressed 5145, who was the 2007 Grand Champion at NWSS, produced the 2009 National Champion Female TR Miss Kaycee.   In 2008 Keppen Charolais was selected as the 2008 Outstanding Seed-stock Producer by the South Dakota Charolais Breeders Association.  We are very pleased with these events as they demonstrate the acceptance of our genetics within the cattle industry.  While we do not go to many cattle shows, we believe our cattle can stand with the best available and they work in the real world under range conditions.  Their off-spring have proven to work from birth-to-weaning-to-the feedyard-to-carcass.  We have selected genetics with the commercial cattleman in mind!  Shows are not our business, but beef production is!!  We believe that cattle can look good and produce in the real world!

As in the past, we do not feed our bulls to achieve their highest rate of gain attainable.  Instead, we prefer to allow our bulls to grow sufficiently without sacrificing breeding longevity.  You will find empty feed bunks in our bull pen.  We feed our bulls alfalfa hay, oats, corn, protein supplement and free-choice grass hay in a growing ration so that they can work for our customers under range conditions.  Our bulls are not fattened!  We have included performance data for you.

Enclosed is a listing of the bulls available for your selection.  Please note that bulls 1765, 1567, 1704, 1846 will be sold by auction at the Watertown Winter Farm Show on 2-8-2012.  If you would like see these bulls prior to the sales, please stop at our farm or visit our website to see their pictures.  If you would like to bid on any of these bulls but are unable to attend the show, please visit with us about making suitable arrangements for transportation and bidding.

With the exception of the Watertown Winter Show Farm Show, we sell our bulls at a reasonable price by private treaty.  Our policy is to receive ½ of the purchase price when you select a bull and the final ½ when he is delivered.   If you desire to leave your bull here until March when they are semen tested and ultra-sounded for carcass data, you may do so at no charge.  If you would like to leave your bull here after semen testing and ultra-sounding, satisfactory arrangements can be made to accommodate your needs.

As in past years we are asking that our customers, who sell their calves as feeders, please inform us where and when their calves will be sold.  Keppen Charolais will inform cattle feeders who are interested in buying quality Charolais genetics.  We hope this service will benefit all cattlemen involved so that all of us can recapture the benefits of using high quality Charolais genetics.

We would like to thank you for considering our genetics in your breeding program.  We believe the artificial breeding, embryo transfers, and natural breeding which we have done since 1987 have placed our genetics in the top of the Charolais breed and will provide greater profit for the cattleman.  Please call or stop in to see the bulls available for you selection!  Select now for later delivery.

                                                                                       Sincerely,
